How to Tread Water and Float: A Guide for Adults

Start With Floating

How to float on your back

Start where you can stand. In shallow water, with a wall or a friend within reach. Confidence is most of this skill, and you do not build it in water that frightens you.

Lean back and let your head go. The instinct is to hold your head up, which sinks everything else. Let it rest fully back until your ears are under the water and you are looking at the ceiling.

Push your hips up. Think about lifting your belly towards the surface. Dropped hips are the single most common reason floating fails.

If your legs still sink

Some people float with their legs near the surface, others hang more vertically. That is normal variation and it does not stop you floating — your face still stays clear of the water, which is the part that matters. A gentle sculling motion with your hands by your hips will hold you steady. Do not conclude you “cannot float” because your feet drop.

Float to Live: The Version That Matters Most

How to Tread Water

Treading water keeps you upright with your head clear, so you can see, talk, breathe easily and signal. It is genuinely useful, and it is much easier than most adults expect once they stop fighting.

Body position

Vertical, or very slightly leaning back — the common description is sitting in a reclining chair. Chin at the water line, shoulders relaxed, body loose. Being rigid makes you sink; being relaxed keeps you up. Your lungs are doing much of the work, so keep breathing steadily rather than gasping.

The arms: sculling

This is the part people get wrong. Your hands do not push down — they sweep horizontally, back and forth in front of you, just below the surface, in a flattened figure-of-eight. Fingers together, palms angled slightly into the direction of travel so each sweep presses against the water.

The legs: three options

Cycling kick — easiest to learn

Slow circles, as if pedalling a bike. Intuitive, forgiving, and perfectly adequate. Start here. The only caution is to keep it slow — fast pedalling burns energy without adding much lift.

Flutter kick — for short bursts

A relaxed up-and-down kick, similar to front crawl but vertical. Fine briefly, but tiring to sustain, so it suits a quick pause rather than a long rest.

Eggbeater — most efficient, hardest to learn

Each leg makes a circular sweep, alternating, like the beaters of a mixer turning in opposite directions. It is what water polo players use because it gives continuous lift with the least effort. It takes practice and it is worth it if you spend real time in deep water — but it is not where a beginner should start.

The mistake that defines beginners

Jerky, rigid, panicked movement. It is the natural response to feeling unsupported, and it is exactly wrong: it burns energy fast, and half the effort pushes you sideways or downwards rather than up. If you are breathless after twenty seconds, the answer is not to work harder — it is to slow everything down and loosen up.

Do not hold your breath to stay afloat

Deliberate breath-holding in water — particularly after hyperventilating, which is exactly what someone struggling will have been doing — risks hypoxic blackout. Lowered carbon dioxide suppresses the urge to breathe, so you can lose consciousness underwater without ever feeling short of air. The American Red Cross, the YMCA of the USA and USA Swimming issued a joint statement against breath-holding practice and prolonged underwater swimming.

The safe version: breathe normally and do not fully empty your lungs. You get the buoyancy benefit of reasonably full lungs without ever making breath-holding the thing keeping you up. Every official UK water-safety message says the same: control your breathing, not hold it.

How to Practise Safely

Lifeguarded pool, always. Never practise these alone, and never first attempt them in open water.

Start in your depth, near the wall. Practise sculling while standing, so your hands learn the movement before they have to hold you up.

Add the legs separately. Hold the poolside and practise the cycling or eggbeater kick before combining it with sculling.

Build in short intervals. Ten seconds, rest, twenty seconds, rest. Stamina here comes from relaxing, not from pushing through exhaustion.

Take someone with you. A friend at the poolside, or a teacher. For a nervous adult in deep water for the first time, that matters more than any drill.
