The 18-time Olympic gold medalist Micheal Phelps and fiancee Nicole Johnson welcomed Boomer Robert Phelps on Thursday night in Arizona, where Phelps has been training in preparation for the Rio Olympics. The Phelps baby has arrived! It only took 5 days of May for Boomer Robert Phelps to make his arrival. Phelps’ Instagram post reports that the baby boy was born on Thursday, May 5th at 7:21 pm. Phelps’ longtime coach, Bob Bowman, confirmed that the baby’s middle name is in his honor, calling it “a big surprise” in a text to The Associated Press.
The swimming sensation and his fiancee, Nicole Johnson, welcomed a baby boy together on Thursday, May 5. Two days after Johnson gave birth, the athlete posted a proud papa photo showing off his wee one -whom the couple named Boomer Robert Phelps.
Phelps had been training at high altitude in Colorado and left the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to return to Johnson’s side.
Last month at a meet in Mesa, Arizona, Phelps said the couple had already selected the baby’s name, although he didn’t reveal it then.
“It’s something we both agreed on, thought it was different,” he said.
Asked what type of parent he would be, Phelps said, “I’ll probably be very protective. That’s how I am.”
Phelps credited Johnson for being “nothing but one of the best supporters I could ask for.”
The black-and-white photo features the shirtless swimmer and his bundle of love, as the adoring new mom rests in a hospital bed. Along with the Instagram photo, the 22-time medalist wrote, “Welcome Boomer Robert Phelps into the world!!! Born 5-5-2016 at 7:21 pm !!! Healthy and happy!!! Best feeling I have ever felt in my firstname.lastname@example.org and Boomer both healthy!!!”
